Our journey began over a decade ago in the trenches of Microsoft Compliance audits. In this role, we delved deep into the complexities of Microsoft licensing, conducting rigorous analyses and compliance checks. Compliance issues were common, but, along the way, we discovered a common theme: companies weren’t deliberately misusing licenses—they simply lacked the time and specialized knowledge needed to navigate the intricacies of licensing.
Recognizing this gap, we decided to change direction. We shifted our focus to Software Asset Management, helping businesses manage their licenses more effectively. Our goal was simple: to help companies maximize their software investments, creating win-win scenarios for everyone involved.
As time went on, Microsoft licensing evolved. The shift to the cloud introduced Azure, along with new licensing models, such as Hybrid Use Rights and various Azure SQL Server types. These changes brought new challenges—servers could now be spun up in seconds, often leading to runaway costs. While FinOps emerged to optimize cloud spending, it often overlooked a critical piece of the puzzle: licensing.
That’s when we decided to found Cloud License and focus exclusively on tackling cloud licensing, initially focussing on Azure. We developed innovative methodologies and tools to not only extract relevant data from Azure but also present it in a way that drives actionable insights. Our mission is to enable your cloud engineers to focus on what they do best—building and managing the cloud—without constantly worrying about costs and licensing.
